We have already noted that Brian joined Clydesdale Harriers after the Lochaber Marathon in 1989 and a conversation with Peter Rudzinski and David Mitchell. Peter remembers the occasion well and has this to say about how Brian joined the club.
I first met Brian Edridge when myself and Dave Mitchell went up to Fort William to run the Lochaber Marathon. It had been an unusually warm day for running in Fort William that April. After the race, Dave and I were hanging about talking to people we knew, complaining about the heat, and blaming it for our disappointing time ( as you do). Brian happened to be in our vicinity and he joined in our conversation to commiserate with us. He told us that “at least you finished the race – I had to drop out because of the heat”. We continued our chat for some time as we awaited the prize-giving ceremony. He told us he had done quite a few marathons although he was not a member of a club. We of course told him all about Clydesdale Harriers. He was quite interested when we told him that we had quite a few decent hill runners in the club who did Sunday runs in the Kilpatrick hills. Anyway, we gave him details of our club meeting times and where to go. Lo and behold, within a few weeks he was down at the club and quickly decided to join.
Brian was an experienced hill runner and found to his delight that he now had fellow members to share his Sunday runs. He formed a good friendship with Jim Shields, Ian Murphy, Brian Potts, Pat Bonner , Andy Dytch, Christine Menhennet, Shelagh King and Marjorie Small and all the rest. Brian also took part in road and cross country events for the club. He also joined the Scottish Veteran Harriers Club and competed in their events. I remember seeing him at the SVHC Cross-Country championshipss at Irvine Moor one year. Brian was always an affable chap by nature and participated whenever his busy schedule allowed. He was frequently away Munro bagging! He is an all-round nice guy and we were lucky to meet him by chance and get him into the club.
